This study examines the relationship between age and depression in Korean adults and intends to explain the relationship with five aspects of age. Korea Welfare Panel Study baseline (2006) data are utilized and the data include the CES-D(the Center for Epidemiological Studies¡¯ Depression) scales. In the results, the relationship between age and depression follows an asymmetrical U-shaped curve. In order to explain the pattern that relatively low depression in young and middle ages rapidly increases in older ages, diverse aspects of age were taken into account. The increasing probabilities of losing marital status due to spouse¡¯s death and losing employment status due to retirement in older ages mainly explained the higher depression in older ages. This study suggests that the later life is not necessarily the period severly suffering from depression if fulfilling daily activities and alternative social support can complement the loss of formal jobs and the loss of a spouse in older adults.
